I thought it was really interesting to see how we built the number system from 9 on up. I didn’t know where the words eleven and twelve came from, and now those words make more sense. My textbooks actually wants students to say that there are 22 tens in a number like 228 and it sometimes throws students off. I realize now how that kind of question really shows which students have a good understanding of place value.
