I really liked the way you counted the fractions as five- one-fifths. How we use language in math has so many implications. Our language/wording can either support understanding or confuse understanding!
Students really so struggle with the unit of measure. I think it is because they are so focused on getting a number, not realizing that unit is part of the answer. It almost seems like they don’t realize how that label helps them visualize what that number represents. If they measure and get 22 cm, do students really see 22 linear units where each one is a centimeter long? I am not positive that they do.
