My first big take away was the progression from the number path to the number line. I feel like we often assume kids understand what that number line represents without realizing how abstract it can be for young math learners. The number path provides a nice concrete link to a more abstract representation. My second take away is how important relationships in math are. Students cannot really determine magnitude unless they begin to understand the relationships between numbers or values. Making that connection that numbers are related to each other and not just a distinct object is important. I feel like being deliberate in helping kids see the magnitude of numbers reinforces the idea of how numbers relate to each other.
