Even in high school, we have this problem. One thing I tell my students is that in most real life problems, there must be units. While 15 is just a number, 15 cm is the lenght of a line, etc. When they give me just nymber answers, I reply “is that smiles, clouds, feet, square inches”, and so on. It usually makes them laugh which helps them remember for next time.
