My biggest take away: Numerical responses just aren’t good enough. I really tried to focus on that as a third grade teacher several years ago, but I now I think we should begin this in kindergarten. Any time they are saying a number as an answer it should have a label. This makes me wonder about number talks with naked numbers and expressions. Wouldn’t this be a great time to practice precision with responses? Rather than solving (9 + 3) how about 9 crayons + 3 crayons? I would still accept all responses such as “12” or “12 crayons” and use it as another teachable moment.
