I’m going to give this one a try tomorrow with my grade 8’s to introduce equations with two variables. Most of them broke down the day 1 task using subtraction and division to balance the equation but avoided the use of variables. They wrote their work on an exit ticket that I added feedback to, then I challenged them the next day to try representing the unknown factor in their work with a letter. It is a challenge for them to recognize which part of the problem should be represented by an integer.
