I have done number talks using rekenreks and number dots to encourage number sense. I have a set of tasks I bought from Teacherspayteachers that has no numbers. It’s just the task and students need to come up with quantities. For example, one was about students in first, second, and third grade getting balloons for a school carnival. I got the actual amount of kids in each of those classes and gave the data to the children. After brain storming, what info we needed to obtain. The students added all the students to get a grand total. Then I had them do a bar graph to represent each grade. I like these tasks because they are open ended and it allows the students an opportunity to problem solve. I want them to ask more questions to figure out what data they need to acquire to solve the task.
