Hi, I’m Emily Johnson from Los Angeles, California. I’m the principal of the middle division (grades 6-8) at a K-12 school. I see the middle schoolers at my school learning a lot of procedures and memorizing formulas and algorithms but not doing much reasoning. If I ask them why multiplying by the reciprocal to divide fractions work, they don’t know. When I ask them what their graphs show, they often aren’t sure. I learned how amazing math is late in my life, and my hope for the students at my school is that they will understand math so that they can truly enjoy it.
