One technique I use instead of raised hands is this:
students get a card on the way in, which tells them where to sit, their group, and what whiteboard they’re working on (BTC).
I ask a question and do a think-pair (or group)-share so that “everyone will be ready to say something”
I have a “shadow deck” that has the same cards used to seat them. Pick a random card from the shadow deck and that ss answers.
