The idea that counting is so much more complex and different than the ABC’s is certainly an interesting perspective that I haven’t thought about before. I also think that students finding their own multiplication “rules” is important and strengthens their number sense. The harder part is going to be how we incorporate this in higher grades to students who are unwilling to let go of some of the rules.
