    I loved just how many different ways I could represent the pattern (with your encouragement). I can see spending more than one class period on this one problem. And I think the advantage of taking the time for multiple representations is the students who just didn’t get there the first time, get a second chance to feel successful.

    My first solution was similar to the parents’ solution. I multiplied 7 (day 2) by 14 (day 3) for 98 hearts. The problem with that pattern is there is no basis for day 1 and day 2, 2 hearts on day one and 7 hearts on day 2 are completely arbitrary. I can see how it is important to spend time with the problem before handing it off to students just so I have a handle on the different paths students can take.
