I teach 8th graders so I am past the point of memorizing math facts even if students don’t know them well. Yes we could have many other things to memorize in 8th Grade but I choose not to. I tell my students the only thing they have to memorize in my class is perfect squares up to 20. What I want them to do is discover things like volume formulas, angle relationships, components of linear functions, etc. Once they are discovered, we work and manipulate concepts in so many different ways that the automaticity comes. I know they will forget parts of what they learn but my hope is that I have built a foundation that they can either reason their way back to understanding or with a little information, I can get them back to a mastery level.
