I show growing patterns a lot in my 7th grade class. We start with just talking about how is it growing and how you might find the number of stars or whatever the shape is in some small number and then a bigger number. But I did not think about breaking the shape apart in different ways to show equivalent expressions. I am looking forward to trying that with our next unit of expressions and equations. (And what a great way of giving an entry point for multiple levels of kids, we can show that the same pattern can be represented in a variety of ways and they are all equivalent!)
