    I agree with what many have said about this topic above. My perspective is being a 4th grade teacher. I often find myself frustrated when teaching 6 digit addition and subtraction and 4 x 1 multiplication or division when students are not yet reaching automaticity with their facts. I do provide multiplication charts to students who need them so they can learn the grade level content. I wonder what we should be doing in our elementary classrooms to ensure that students have ample opportunities to become automatic in basic facts so that they are able to solve middle elementary and middle school standards with less difficulty. It seems to be a challenge everywhere (Canada and the US at least…) I wonder what we all need to do differently…
