The topic of memorization vs automaticity is huge in my district right now. We have teachers and parents on both sides of this that are passionate about their view. It is interesting as the district math coach that because of my age (let’s just say I look like a veteran teacher) that many parents assume I am on the memorize bandwagon. But I would much rather have a student who can think and reason their way to a computation because they see the relationships between numbers in order to do so. So I am in this workshop to learn ways to help teachers help students become mathematicians and not rote memorizers!
