I have been told that I need to make sure that I provide a lot of practice problems and give students calculators because kids can’t calculate in their heads. This bothers me. I don’t want kids to memorize and yet I don’t think that giving a student a calculator is a bad thing.
Understanding what each computation will do to a number is important and I want kids to get the basics of that. I want kids to know how the computations work and what the numbers mean.
