This is a huge conversation in my school right now for students transitioning from elementary to middle school, along with conversation of what to do when student don’t have automaticity by middle school. One of things I appreciate being mentioned is the order of things. Teachers often feel they can not do thought provoking math until after students are fluent. But sometimes it’s the context that gets students interested in the math, asking to learn new efficient methods, or recognizing patterns.
