As a high school math teacher I have always struggled to understand why the students struggle so much with the basics, but this has been quite enlightening. The part about unitizing was really helpful because so many of my students have no idea about place value, and this helps explain why. Just this morning, one of my better students was asking for help with a problem, and the only reason she needed help was because she had no idea what place value any number was even in, much less an understanding of what it actually means. I am fortunate to be working in a school that understands that I have to take my students where they are and build from there, so I will probably end up using a lot of these ideas which are really aimed at younger students, and hopefully see some amazing growth.
