I find using minilessons or math talks that involve a string of related problems that are designed to explicitly emerge a big idea, strategy and/or mathematical model can be extremely helpful. By having a plan for which big idea, strategy and model you hope to emerge, it makes the number talk very intentional and can help those students you’re referencing.
