I was thinking about the prompt and looking at others’ responses and I like what Anne said about friendly numbers. I think that as soon as I see the rate of 2 ml per grain I just want to use that and jump to equations and graphs and then I look at students and say the slope is 2 and they no longer are seeing the 2 ml of water to 1 grain of rice. And there for me is the ratio/rate comparison. I think I am seeing it as slope/rate of change being the composed unit that derived from the ratio comparing ml of water to grain of rice.
