    So obviously I am more of a rate reasoner, because I had a lot of trouble finding ways of solving the problem using ratios. And I never thought of the relationships of 4/5 and 5/4 because I was caught up in the 1:2 of my prior knowledge and that was the only thing apparent to me.

    Like someone else commented, I also remember learning to cross-multiply to find equivalent fractions and even up to this day am unable to articulate all the rate/ratio relationships that it shows, although it is becoming clearer to me. With the students that I teach (Grade 5), I would be happy if they were able to find some equivalent relationships using multiplicative thinking and I would perhaps ask them how many mL of water we would need for 500mL of rice, but I don’t know if this task would be something I would choose to do with them at this point. Maybe later in the year…?
