We too used to avoid certain models or strategies thinking it would be confusing or just more to remember. The realization we’ve had since is that models like number lines are tools that have legs and can be utilized in so many different ways. So rather than approaching their use as another procedure to memorize, we want to build flexibility using them so students pull them out on their own to solve problems.
