Our school does a lot of work around equity, implicit bias, etc., and I’m nervous about using my professional judgment. As a white teacher in one of the most diverse schools in Oregon, I know the harm can come when a teacher evaluates students inconsistently without even realizing that they are doing it. My question or wondering is how to we insulate or protect our grading judgment from biases we might not even be aware of? Is there a risk that how we grade, if based in part by our own observations and judgment, could be tainted by a cultural lens that is different than that of our students?
