    In the past I’ve had one lesson where we use 2-sided counters to model adding integers and then in the next lesson we add integers without them. That first lesson there is always a group that wants to jump and so I get excited, however the 2nd lesson can bomb. Instead I can pivot and do more visual representations, going into a more abstract way, but with still some visual. Students could use number lines or drawings to show their understanding.
