Greetings fellow math folks!
My name is Melissa Quirk Cairns and I’m a middle school math teacher in North Adams, Massachusetts (in the beautiful Berkshire hills!).
I’ve been teaching since 1991 (yes, when the dinosaurs roamed) and began teaching via Teach for America, with whom I trained in Los Angeles, then was posted in Houston, Texas for a couple years. I’ve spent most of my career teaching English and theatre, but switched to math a few years ago.
I think of it as “I teach students” more than simply “I teach math.”
To that end, a hallmark of my teaching is differentiation, integrating the arts, adding UBD options for more personalized approach and getting into the hands-on and “why do we do this” bits.
So – it should be pretty clear why I think joining this family is a no-brainer. 😉
This fall I’ll be teaching 7th grade Honors Math and two sections of grade 8 math. I have the luxury of 90 minute periods for the full year for each of these sections. I love the extended time, because it allows time for community-building and project-based work.
Looking forward to learning with you all!
