Transparency is very important. The real question would be what is more transparent: a number or descriptive feedback?
There is no right answer there, but I bet a couple sentences says more about what a student brings to the table and where they need to improve vs say a 78%. It also depends on what your goal is. If it is just to get a mark or to continually improve.
