I finished the Start the School Year Off Right course and loved the idea of jumping right in to working on math tasks in small, random groups. Showing students how the school year will go is way better than telling them.
I can’t wait to meet and get to know my students! I have set a goal to memorize all their names in the first two weeks of school. I also plan to get to know them through a pie chart assignment in which they create a pie chart for how they spend their time. It will be interesting to learn about their activities outside of my classroom so I can better support them.
I also met with all my coworkers (except for one other teacher who is new to the school) and got to know them individually. I feel much more comfortable now that I know their names and a bit about them. I’m looking forward to working with them because they all seem to get along well.
Lastly, I’ve been getting to know my curriculum by studying the textbook for my Integrated 1 class and the online materials for my Algebra 1 class. Knowing exactly what topics I will be teaching is very helpful. My next step is to identify the standards or learning goals I need to cover and find tasks or activities for my students to do so they can learn them.
