I often find that students who don’t have knowledge or experience with something have difficulty making an estimate. Suppose a student has never cooked before or made rice before. It makes the estimation possibly way off because they haven’t had the experience. I find it difficult to do problems with 8th graders that begin with, ” You rented a car…” or ” You took out a loan from the bank….” . I would definitely do this activity because I do believe they get the gist of it.
