I love how this gives students a more flexible way of thinking. So often my Middle School students jump to an algorithm that they are not sure of. When they miscalculate they feel defeated and give up. Giving them tools like number line thinking or adding 1 to the subtrahend and minuend to make the calculation easier is a must. We so often just expect our students to do this.
