Building Mathematical Capacity Series
A task-based professional learning course for K–8 educators and math leaders focused on building deep mathematical understanding, strengthening instruction, and supporting student sense-making across key math concepts.
Welcome to Building Mathematical Capacity
Building Mathematical Capacity is a professional learning course designed to strengthen the mathematical understanding and instructional decision-making of educators and leaders across grades K–8 and beyond.
At the heart of this course is a simple but powerful belief:
Lasting improvement in mathematics doesn’t come from new programs or faster pacing—it comes from building deep understanding of the mathematics we teach and the structures students rely on to make sense of it.
Across these sessions, you’ll step into the role of a learner, engaging with rich tasks that surface the same ideas students must wrestle with in classrooms. You’ll explore how mathematical concepts develop over time, how representations support reasoning, and how seemingly different topics—fractions, ratios, percents, operations, data, patterns, and algebra—are deeply connected.
This course is intentionally task-based and concept-driven. Rather than focusing on tips or scripts, each session is designed to help you:
- Strengthen your own conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas
- See how student strategies emerge from problem structures and representations
- Make sense of why procedures work, not just how to perform them
- Develop instructional moves that surface, extend, and respond to student thinking
The sessions included in this course span foundational and transitional topics such as:
- Operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Fractions, decimals, and percents
- Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
- Data reasoning and representation
- Integers, patterns, and early algebraic thinking
While each session can stand alone, together they form a coherent learning progression focused on helping educators build the mathematical capacity required to support sense-making, flexibility, and long-term understanding in students.
Whether you are a classroom teacher refining your practice, a coach supporting others, or a leader building system-wide coherence, this course is designed to help you move beyond surface-level coverage and toward instruction that is intentional, connected, and grounded in how students actually learn mathematics.
We’re glad you’re here.
