Death to Keep Change Flip and Other Crimes Against Sense-Making – Dr. Alison J. Mello

Module Progress

If you’ve ever felt frustrated because your students don’t remember what they learned last year (or last week!), this session is for you. It’s time to replace shortcuts with sense-making, and allow students to uncover and discover how math ideas are connected. With the right tools, questions, language, and contexts, you can take your instruction from teflon to velcro, because despite what the rabbit said, tricks are NOT for kids!

Dr. Alison J. Mello

Co-Author, Math Specialist, Alison Mello Math Consulting

As a former struggling math student, nobody was more surprised than me to find myself pursuing more and more math courses and leaving the classroom to be a middle school math specialist. From there, I served as the K-8Math/Science Curriculum Director and then the Assistant Superintendent. While I love leadership and systems, my desire to focus on math led me to resign and pursue my passion for supporting teachers, leaders, and students at the ground level. It has also given me more time to write. I look forward to book #5 dropping at NCTM this Fall.
